Hamm provides food and shelter, whereas Clov provides legs and eyesight. Hamm then demands that Clov look out the window and report what he sees, which is nothing. Hamm threatens to hold back food from him, and Clov goes for Hamm's sheet.
The pauses which often interrupt the slow motion of the act appear to be pauses that occur before a movement in the game. After some more debate, Hamm asks him what he does in his kitchen. The setting, therefore, is typical of Beckett; it is bizarre and unfamiliar, one that can evoke multiple associations and interpretations. For each one who begins to weep somewhere else another stops. As in a game of chess, the characters are forced either to move only in a certain way or to be completely motionless.
The pauses concretize the fatigue of the characters but also convey the vague hope that there will be a continuation. It still felt very much like 3 stars with it absurdity, strangeness and at some point senselessness. Nagg emerges from his bin, biscuit in mouth, and listens. Hamm's parents, Nagg and Nell, having lost their legs many years ago in a bicycle accident, live in ashbins from which they occasionally emerge only to be cursed by their son.
Throughout the play, Hamm and Clov make statements that indicate that they long for the end, and that they think it is time to end. I have some ideas about what the play may represent Beckett wrote many strange plays, though sometimes the strange is needed to capture an aspect of reality that is, by its very nature, strange, mystical and untouchable. Whether it is the story about the tailor, which juxtaposes its conceit of creation with never-ending delays, Hamm and Clov's killing the flea from which humanity may be reborn, or the numerous references to Christ, whose death gave birth to a new religion, death-related endings in the play are one and the same with beginnings. Endgame 44 The hesitant manner in which he indicates that this melancholic experience is not so unusual suggests that he and Clov may be suffering from the madman's psychosis. As with Waiting for Godot, Beckett uses comedy, laughter and slap-stick humour in Endgame. Even the slowest train on this brief line is not ten minutes and more behind its scheduled time without good cause. However, Clov does not listen well enough, and we soon learn that he did not understand everything that she said to him.
Clov goes to the kitchen. The first character to appear is Hamm's servant, Clov, who goes through a long routine — he opens the curtains on the windows and pulls the sheets off of all the other characters. My romantic side at some point during my reading would like me to believe that this is about friendship like Vladimir and Estragon in Godot but here Hamm is consistently critical of Clov as if the later is the former's slave or inferior. What makes us most uncomfortable, and how can we open ourselves to admit, face, and respond to that? He wrote in both English and French. On the last page of the play, when Hamm is talking, he pauses a lot and I got the feeling that he was almost reading from a script. Clov must get the stepladder he has either shrunk or else the windows have risen and the telescope.
We later discover that through the years, he has been constantly recording observations about his life on tape; now, he sits in his rather sparsely furnished apartment listening to old tapes and making new ones. I found particularly interesting Cohn's relation to Beckett's Hamm and the Bible's Ham. Slocum's car dies, and he can get it started again only with difficulty. He is blind, paralytic and cannot stand. It is not to be reador rather it is not only to be read. Hamm asks him if he remembers when he came here, but Clov says he was too small. At the end, Hamm calls out to Nagg and then to Clov.
Since the absence of meaning is fundamental to Kristeva's conception of melancholia, I will first consider the well-noted difficulty of deriving a stable interpretation of Endgame. Then other things begin to appear: a tree and a carafe of water. How we are actually living our life without a clear purpose is shown through the characters repetition of absurd conversation and not remembering when and where to meet a stranger named Godot. Coupled with rhetorical awkwardness, they make up a world of unsettling, infectious ill-being Black Sun 258. It is the shape that matters.
